Scilly, Ireland and Scotland 2022

Staffa

Our spring cruise, like every year, is already being organized.

This year we will leave from Kernevel, Port la Forêt, Douarnenez and Saint Malo on May 14th.

We planned to join us, depending on the weather, at Ouessant or Aber Vrac’h to cross to the Scillys. The goal of the game is to go up as quickly as possible towards Dublin or the west of England to go quickly to visit this superb playground that is Scotland then to dawdle on the way down. The best season, if there is one, is indeed late May-early June. Our team members will be able to join us via Glasgow airport between June 9th and 13th. The goal of the game is to return around the end of June to participate on July 9 in this unmissable event that is the Ronde Sénane organized by our friends from Audierne. A must.

Like every year, this cruise will not be a rally and even less a regatta. But more a conveyance in all friendship. Everyone does the whole thing or joins us to do a bit. Nothing is imposed, everything is possible… Including participating as a team member. Only condition: to be a member up to date with his AIP subscription! Those who have already done Scilly with us, around the Isle of Wight and last year Spain and the top of Portugal can testify to this: the stopovers are hot!

Xavier’s Advice (X-Ray)

Dare Weather 4D!

Many of us have Adrena routing software on our chart table. What remains the must for ocean races is not necessarily suitable for our summer cruises even if they may turn out to be offshore…

Having a backup on a tablet, which moreover, can be moved in the cockpit, is therefore a plus.

The app

Weather4D Routing & Navigation, for iOS (iPad/iPhone), the first integrated map navigation, weather and routing application developed in France, offers all navigation functions: waypoints, routes, tracks and supports many maps including those of official hydrographic services (Shom, UKHO). Connected to the instruments by NMEA Wifi interface, if available, it displays AIS targets and manages alarms.

Equipment

  • An IPad AIR 3 wifi +cellular with at least 128 GB of memory can be found used for around 250 €. Super value for money, far from the new overpriced models. Please note, only the wifi+cellular model has a GPS, even if the use of a SIM card is not required for our application.
  • Waterproof protection: not necessary but reassuring. A wave came so quickly… Expensive but effective. Count 250 €. Bonus: a system of three suction cups with a ball joint will allow you to fix it and orient it outside.
  • External backup batteries: easy to find, inexpensive and now large capacity.
  • Cartography: a simple annual subscription by GeoGarage . For example: SHOM for the whole of France €59.99 and/or its counterpart UKHO for the English coasts €69.99.
  • Weather subscription: annual €37.99.

Trainings

Training has been regularly offered for four years to members of the AIP up to date with their dues at Francis’ home, now in Saint-Nazaire. He is a born pedagogue: from the simple neophyte to the eater of plays, everyone finds his account there for a very modest cost.

Three days out of the four offered this year are still available on our site. It’s up to you to enjoy it before the release of our toys. Register quickly

    Conduct of man overboard exercises

One of the trainees dons a survival suit and at the trainer’s signal jumps into the water.
The crew must react and maneuver to retrieve the man overboard and hoist him aboard.
In the first exercise, the trainer gives no instructions to the crew. At the end of each test, the trainer conducts a mini debriefing / discussion with the crew.
Problems are highlighted and improvements are made. With each attempt, the trainer suggests techniques to improve the exercise. The crew makes them their own and experiments with them during the next exercise.
The observation of the semi-rigid allows to visualize the maneuvers as a whole. The pilot explains the maneuvers and comments on the results and errors.

Depending on weather conditions, some phases of this program may be cancelled.

Drain the keel hydraulics (pogo 10.50)

Pogo Structures recommends changing the keel hydraulic oil every two years.

Use HV46 oil, 3 liters are enough.

The document below shows the instructions.

Be careful not to overfill (see picture) !

Instruction for changing the oil on Pogo 10.50

Replace or check keel axis

Concerning pogo 10.50 (I don’t know for other models), Pogo Structures has noticed that over time the hydraulic cylinder axis could move and thus damage the keel well. Indeed, the stainless steel circlips that block this axis can deteriorate or move. Pogo Structures advises to check the condition of these by looking through the small plexiglass window on the starboard side.

You have two solutions:

  1. Replace the two circlips with new ones (you also have to remove the cylinder axis to change the bottom one, the operation can be tricky)
    circlips
  2. Pogo Structures made a modification on the axis to block it with a screw on both sides it offers you a kit including a modified cylinder axis + 2 plexiglass portholes for 120€ including tax and shipping costs to Europe. Detailled instructions are attached below (in french).

Solent adjustment by 3D ring

As part of the 2022 training courses, we are dedicating one to the adjustment of the solent by the 3D ring.

We will deal more widely with the adjust of the sails on our boats:

  • the adjustment of the mast (shape of the mainsail).
  • the principles of 3D adjustment.
  • the adjustment according to the speeds.
  • adjusting a staysail with a downwind sail in position.

We have planned two dates: Saturday May 7 and Sunday May 8, 2022, in Lorient.

Meeting at 9:30 am at the Lorient Grand Large hall, 6B rue François Toullec, 56100 Lorient (intercom)

  • The morning in the classroom will be devoted to theory;
  • the afternoon at sea, on a Pogo, will allow to experiment.

These sessions of 5 participants will be led by Benoit Hantzperg, experienced racer (4th in the Transat Jacques Vabre 2021 in Class 40) and master sailor.

Sunday’s session is already full, other sessions may be offered if needed.

On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, AIP is covering part of the costs – a quarter – of this training.

Cost for the member: 45€.

Minutes of the GA 2021

Our general meeting was held on the opening day of the Nautic, near the Paris boat show. A small zoom connection was set up to allow Benoit and Giuseppe to participate remotely. .

We were able to take stock of the past year and outline the prospects for the coming year. We had the pleasure to welcome to the Board two new members: Agnès Gach (Kavok II) and Claude Bailly (Balou) and two permanent guests: Giuseppe Denti (P’ago) and Claude Nos (Venullus).

You will find the documents of the GA on the page: https://www.assopogo.net/les-documents/

  • Charentes : 8 bateaux
  • Méditerranée Occidentale : 7 bateaux

Lancez-vous, c’est une charge légère.

Amicalement

Benoît le Masson, secrétaire de l’AIP
