      Hello,

I am looking for knowledge/experience from those who have pulled electric cables in the mast of pogo 8.5. I want to replace my nav lights to install 2 in 1 with anchor lights in addition, only while trying to use a messenger that had already been pre-installed, it broke near the “chute”.

It’s hard to know how the mast inside is made, and I’m apprehensive about using my current nav lights directly to pull the new cable.

      Any ideas/advice?

      Thanks in advance!

        Good evening,

I replaced my light and cables on a grounded mast, so it’s easier and it wasn’t an 8.50 pogo. But, a priori, the current cable can be used as a messenger, by extending it with a cord. Then you reinforce the new rope with the cord.

Thanks for your feedback, Emmanuel. How does the fact that the mast has been removed make it easier for the cable to pass through? How did you make your cord-cable junction?

It’s easier on land than at the top of the mast! And if it gets stuck, it’s easier to pull at the other end.

For the junction, I pierce the cable (at about 1cm) with a needle, thread the cord which I tie with a bowline knot, for example, and cover the whole thing with gray tape, so that nothing catches, trying to keep it as thin as possible. If you don’t pull hard, there’s no reason for it to let go, and if it does, there should be a reason. Of course, installing the cord is no problem at all, since it’s thinner than the cable. On the other hand, on the return trip, it may rub more. You may want to put a little silicone grease on the junction.

Likewise, I had changed just about everything on land (windvane and lights). Soap (washing-up liquid) also works to make the cables slide.

Superb thanks for your advice, we managed to change the existing cable by replacing it with a messenger at first, then we made a surliure between the messenger and new cable. Everything worked fine, just a little scraping when passing through the vertical mast chute.

                Thanks a lot!

And if things go wrong (but they won’t), you’ll be left with the electrician’s needle (or fiberglass wire puller).
