Rudder bar restoration

      Hello, I’ve just sanded the rudder bars on our Pogo 8.50. They look great and I’d like them to keep their natural color/appearance. Depending on the type of wood, I may or may not be able to do without varnish. Can anyone give me information and, if necessary, advice on the need (or not) to treat/varnish? If it’s mahogany, it seems advisable… if it’s an exotic wood (teak or padouk), it doesn’t seem essential. Thanks in advance!

        Hello,

        I did the same operation several years ago. I varnished my two bars with 7 coats of Tonkinois, then darkened with water-based paper and reapplied a coat every year, the varnishes are impeccable and the wood preserved.

          According to the specialist marine joiner/cabinetmaker I consulted, the bars are teak (good quality). So we won’t be varnishing them. They’ll turn silver over time, but won’t require any maintenance.
